Black Friday 2014

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014

It’s back!  Our Black Friday sale is happening again!

Come to Stillwater at 8am on Black Friday.  Well, you might want to get there a little early, we always have a line:)
.
Downtown Stillwater is doing their Sleepyhead Doorbusters again this year.  There will be fun things happening that day and all season long downtown.  Check out Discover Stillwater for the details on the other happenings…
.
Here are our plans for Black Friday.
.
20% off everything in the store from 8am – noon*
.
The first 20 people get an additional 20% off coupon to use in the store at another time.
.
Hikoo yarns will be 20% off all day long!  That is Simpliworsted, Simplicity and CoBaSi.  We love, love, love these yarns and know that you will to.  We have almost every color of Simpliworsted and Simplicity on our shelves.
.
All of our prepackaged kits will be 20% off all day long!  We’ll have a few new kits ready for you on Black Friday.
.
Come join us.

A few little rules:
.

  • We can’t hold yarn for you before the sale.  So if you have something on the hold shelf that is waiting to be purchased, that yarn won’t be included in the sale.  That just isn’t fair!
  • We’ll do our best to wind your yarn that day, but the winder will be working overtime.  So either you’ll have to be patient, or leave your yarn and we’ll wind it up for you to pick up later!
  • You have to be in a good mood.  We can’t have crabby, overfed knitters, crocheters, spinners and weavers wandering about!

Great American Wool Festival Review

Friday, October 3rd, 2014

The first annual Great American Wool Festival is in the books.  Can we all agree that for social media purposes #GAWF will work next year?  The full title is a lot to type with our thumbs!

What a great time. A perfect partner with The Yarnery.  We had perfect weather (maybe even a little hot),  great yarn and fun fiber friends.  What’s not to love.   We loved it so much that we already booked next year.  Save the date for Sunday, September 27th, 2015.  We’ll see you then with a few new surprises.

We would love for you to share any of your photos with us.  The day got away from us quickly so we’d love to see the event through your eyes.  Email us, post them on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and feel free to with #GAWF…save your thumbs:)

By the way…I did a quick Urban Dictionary search of GAWF, based on my purple nurple fiasco, and it looks like we are good to go!

Take a Note

Monday, June 2nd, 2014

I needed to jot something down today so I opened up the notes app in my IPhone.

I jotted down my note and then thumbed down and glanced at the other notes I’ve taken.  Have you done this recently?

image(11)

What?  The only one of these that even looks like something I recognize is the Sequin Pinot Grigio…a delicious wine if you are looking for one:)  Like a duck…7, 14 15 reindeer…Diablo Nemesis…358?  What?

I have pages of these.

image

I’ve got just number ones too…

image(10)

No idea what these numbers mean.  I’m gonna guess they are yarn color numbers?

I asked around and Carly and Jen had random notes too.

One page of Carly’s…

image(7)

Some are really fun important notes.   Carly taught a kids knit class and noted a funny thing one of the kiddos said.

image(8)

She had a random number one too.  Your guess is as good as hers.

image(9)

As useless as these notes are, I can’t bring myself to delete them yet.  Maybe one day I will be asked a question and I will say “Eureka!  That answer is 7, 14 15 reindeer!

Oh Hay’ll No!

Our old historic bridge is only so tall.

Yesterday, a truck hauling hay across from MN to WI misjudged the height of his load and off went a good dozen bales.  Stopping traffic both directions…right around rush hour time.

hay on bridge

Hay!

Jen thought we should make the most of the traffic so she made a little sign for us…

The back side reads…”You might as well stop for yarn!”

Here’s to a hay-free, delay-free summer of driving in Stillwater!

What Motivates Them?

Monday, February 3rd, 2014

.
I am never going to be an Olympian.  I can say that for certain.
.
I’m not going to swim from Cuba to the Florida Keys
.
I am not going to win the Superbowl.
.
These are things that I know for sure.
.
In fact, I can’t even begin to imagine the discipline it must take to do any of these things; the focus, the determination, the sacrifice.
.
Can you?
.
I have run a few half marathons, I have biked a few MS150s, I have opened a yarn store and run it for almost 5 years, but these things pale in comparison to what others choose to do.
.
Let’s just talk Olympic hopefuls for a second.  Some of these athletes train their whole lives for one try.  Can you imagine?  Training for years and then only getting one crack at it.  No second chances.  Man, you’ve gotta want it.
.
It’s why I watch the Olympics with my hands over my face most times.  I can’t stand to see anyone fall, or fail.  I mean when a speed skater has one chance to make it to the next heat and she falls?!  Who cares what country she is from.   Or when an ice skater falls while trying to stick the landing of a triple sow cow something or another.  EEEEKKKK!  My heart falls.
.
It’s all or nothing with the Olympics and lets be real here, more of them fail to win than get on the medal stands.   There are 294 medal opportunities in Sochi and over 3,500 athletes will compete.  Those aren’t great odds.
.
I’d venture a guess that most of them know they don’t have a chance to medal. So, what motivates them?  And how do I instill just a bit of that drive and passion in my kiddos, heck, in me too?

What’s Your Excuse

Friday, October 18th, 2013

So, what’s your excuse for not coming to the Three Irish Girls Trunk Show this weekend?
.

1. I don’t have a “golden ticket” – YOU DON’T NEED ONE!
You just need to show up on Saturday or Sunday and give us 15-20 minutes of your time seaming up a square or two before you get the ticket. So YES you can come tomorrow or Sunday and get in!
.

2. I don’t know how to seam – YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW HOW!
We’ll teach you that day! We’ll even provide the darning needles!
.

3. I don’t need anymore yarn – YES YOU DO!
Come on now…we all know you could handle one more skein.
.

See you Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th!

We’re jumping on…

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

We’re jumping on the bandwagon.
.
The Stephen West bandwagon that is.
.
If you are a Ravelry.com user, you have probably heard about Westknits new Mystery Knit A Long.  Not on Ravelry, or ever heard of a mystery knit a long?  Well, the idea is that you have no idea what the pattern is.  You are told what materials you need and then you wait.  You wait for parts of the pattern to be released.
.
The last knit a long that he did ended up being Rockefeller.  Whoa.
.

Kate's Rockefeller

The photo above is from our friend and teacher Kate’s Rockefeller.  She’s katecknits on rav.
.
Since Kate has knit a number of other Stephen West patterns…

I was trying to not be interested in the mystery and then I flipped through some of the photos of the works in progress after the first clue.  It sucked me in.  Cool huh?

We’ve decided that Kate would be the perfect person to work through the latest Westknits Mystery Knit Along.  It’s not too late for you to jump in too.
.
Look for a post with some color choices tomorrow.  We need your help choosing colors.
.
If left to her own devices, Kate will knit it in grey, grey and grey.

Melancholy for Madison

Monday, September 2nd, 2013

Audrey’s moving to college.  She’s going to my Alma Mater, UW Madison.
.
Audrey has been a part of our lives for 4 years.  She takes care of my kiddos after school and in the summer.  Her family and mine are intertwined.
.
Anyway, her move to Madison has me melancholy.  It was a mere 23 years ago (holy crap) that I made this same pilgrimage.
.
I moved into Witte Hall with my high school pal Jami.  I moved with one suitcase of clothes, my tiny little tv and a hot pot.

.
I don’t remember too many specifics about that day.  I remember we had to wait forever for the elevator and I remember watching my mom leave.  I remember that feeling.  That sour feeling in my stomach.  I wasn’t sad, or scared.  I was excited and probably in shock.  I couldn’t believe I was actually doing it.|
.
.
I have mostly great memories of my life in Madison.  So many great times; Halloween,  5th quarter at football games, Mifflin Street Block Party, The Terrace, LaBamba burritos as big as your head, The Red Shed, Boots at the Essen Haus, Hempfest, so many things I can’t even list them.  I am grateful for those memories.
.

We came to see the band:)

.

I made life long friends in college.  Mike, Eric, Korinne, Jami, Carmen; these friends I would later watch get married, have babies, get high powered important jobs and travel with to Europe.  Korinne, Jami and I were roommates the entire time.  We learned so much together.  We experienced so much together.  We made great, important life decisions.  We also made not so smart decisions.   We will forever have that connection, that shared experience.  I am grateful for those friendships.
.
.
My hope for Audrey is that she will find a great group of friends that will take care of each other.  Watch out for each other.   We did.  Our friends Mike, Eric, Jeff, Jim and Mark took care of us.  They never left us behind at a frat house, never let us walk home alone.  I am grateful for those protectors.
.

Enjoy this time Audrey.  Trust your gut, but don’t be close minded.  Keep your options open but stay focused on your goals.  Spend a beautiful day enjoying the terrace and don’t feel guilty about it.
.
This time in college is short.  Live it each day.  Be grateful.
.

Audrey Move In Day

.
Hopefully, maybe 23 years from now, you will be grateful for your time in Madison and will be feeling melancholy for your Alma Mater too.

“Your sign says…”

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

.
We stopped carrying fabric a few weeks ago.
.
We averaged less than 20 yards a week in sales of fabric for over a year.  And of course the minute we get rid of it, everyone starts to ask for it.
.
Isn’t that just how it works?
.
When you are looking for a new house, all of a sudden you see all the for sale signs in yards.
.
When you are getting a new roof, you hear all the roofing commercials on tv.
.
When you become a parent you turn every time you hear “Mom…or Dad”
.
When your in-laws are coming over you finally see all the dog hair on the wood floor.
.
Anyway, we are tired of disappointing people who come in the store because our window signs say we sell fabric.  They say “your sign says fabric?”  And then we have to say we don’t carry it anymore and try to direct people to another shop.  They seem so sad and that makes us sad.
.
So, we’ve taken matters into our own hands.  We can’t get the signs permanently changed just yet so…
.

.
Duct tape…it’s good for so many things.

Tweed Heaven

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

.
If it wasn’t weird, I would roll around in it.
.
That is how happy I am about getting the Rowan Tweed Line of yarn on our shelves.  We have all 3 weights of Rowan Tweed represented right now and we have every color of the Fine Tweed in stock.  We also have more than a dozen colors of Felted Tweed.

Lots and lots of new yarns are arriving every day for fall.  It’s always fun to get new yarns in the store.
.
But this shipment.  Ooooohhhhh.
