12 in 12 2014 May – August

Thursday, April 3rd, 2014

Our 12 in 12 program for this year has changed just a bit…read about it here.
.
Sweaters May – August are chosen below.
.
Hiro, by Julia Farwell Clay,  is our May Sweater.
.
.
Sarah looks great in hers.  She used Cascade 220 worsted.  Read about her sweater here.
.
June’s sweater is Hitofude Cardigan.
.
This beautiful sweater is an easy lace pattern, knit out of a fingering weight yarn.  Perfect for June knitting:)
.
.
July’s sweater is Nyanen, by Cecily Glowik MacDonald.  We are knitting this beauty out of Quince & Co, Sparrow.  It’s perfection.
.
.
We are also doing another CustomFit sweater in July!  So, you get another chance to work on a CustomFit.  Oh and fun news, we are going to be a CustomFit shop!  So we’ll soon be able to measure and help you get patterns directly from CustomFit.  Cool huh?   Knit the sweater in a class too!
.
August’s 12 in 12 is the Mondo Cable Cardi.  This very wearable sweater is worked in worsted weight yarn and will be the perfect sweater to head into fall.  Make it with full, short or cap sleeves.

Water and Stone

Water and Stone

Water and Stone Mid Month Update:

Hey all. Just checking in with my progress on the Water and Stone cardigan for December’s 12 in 12. I’m so happy I went with the cables along both sides of the collar, and straight down the back. the symmetry pleases me, and it gives more ‘action’ to the knitting. Just a little more cable to make it more exciting.

I also added the sleeves as soon as I finished the skein after the sleeve split, because I’m afraid of how boring they are, and I want to use up every last yard. This way, I can just knit on the body until I run out of yarn.

Currently, my next right side row will be the beginning of the hip increases for the waist shaping, and I’ve got two full skeins of the Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport to go. Will see how long it gets! My goal is to finish up this week, so I can have it at the shop in time for the 12 in 12 celebration.

happy knitting!

12 in 12 – 2014

Monday, December 9th, 2013

.
It’s almost that time again, another year of 12 in 12’s!
.
We are doing things a little differently this year.  We are going to have a class for each sweater this time around.  You don’t have to take the class to participate, but if you do, you’ll be guaranteed dedicated time by a DKA professional:)
.
We’ll still be doing our 20% off yarn to make each sweater and we’ll still be giving out $10 gift cards to those who finish in the same month.
.
One big difference is that we aren’t going to be announcing the sweaters all at one time.  We have found, that when December rolls around, we really don’t want to HAVE to knit that sweater we chose 11 months before.  So, we are going to announce the sweaters by trimester.  So, all 4 sweaters and the dates of the classes are on our website.
.
January’s sweater is a simple pullover from Tin Can Knits Simple Collection.   The sweater is called Flax and is knit seamlessly, in the round, from the top down.  This would be the perfect First Sweater Class.
.

.

.
February’s sweater is one that almost all of us have in our queue.  Tea Leaves Cardigan!   Again, you can purchase yarn for this sweater all year long at 20% off and knit this sweater on your own.  If you want to get a little help in a class with other students, click here to register.
.

Tea Leaves Cardigan

.
March is going to be a fun one.  Customfit is a website by the super smart Amy Herzog.  This sweater is a build your own really.  You choose the yarn you want, make a gauge swatch, enter that and your measurements into her website.  Then you pick what style you want and presto…a customfit pattern written just for you.
.
This would be a good class to take.  We’ll help you measure your gauge and measure you.  We’ll help you enter everything in the computer, print the pattern and get you knitting!
.
Nadia has already knit 2 sweaters using this website, so she’ll have lots of tips and tricks for us!    If you want to see real people in real sweaters click here for the Ravelry page.
.
.
Kate walks us through the Shalom Cardigan in April.  This is another sweater that is in most of our queues.  Fast, easy and not much yarn required…heck,we’ll be paying you to make this sweater:)
.

.
Sweaters for May – August will be revealed in March, when our Summer DKU Schedule comes out.
.
Just to make sure we are clear…
.
You still get 20% off the yarn to make these sweaters any time you want this year.
You still get a $10 gift card if you knit the sweater in the same month we knit it. (on your honor of course)
You don’t have to knit all 12 sweaters and you don’t have to take a class.
We are only revealing 4 sweaters at a time:)

Water and Stone

.
Hey all, this is Kate. I’ll be leading the December 12 in 12 sweater for Darn Knit Anyway, Veera Valimakii’s Water and Stone: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/water-and-stone.
.
I’ll be knitting this in Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport in the Manzanita colorway (yes.. it’s a COLOR, it’s NOT gray.. or black!)
.

Lornas Laces Shepherd Sport

.

I can see where I queued this on November 19, 2012. When I think over the last year, there’s been so much change for me, and many of my friends. The consistency? Our friends, our families, and, the things that make us happy. Knitting? always makes me happy. Creating something beautiful and useful from string and needles is gives me an unbelievable feeling of satisfaction.

 .

I’m excited to start working on this sweater today, a day late, and will keep everyone posted on my progress on my ravelry.com projects page: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/katecknits and on the DKA blog as I can.
.
Happy knitting. 🙂

Finish It! 12 in 12

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013

We are just finishing up a great Aidez Cardigan Class this week (we may just bleed into a few more weeks…but that is beside the point:)
.
Anyway, a few of the students in the class mentioned that they hadn’t yet finished Bedford.  One of our 12 in 12 from 2012.  They were commiserating about how they were sooooo close to being done, they just didn’t finish.   So, they decided that when they finished Aidez, they would get together and finish Bedford!
.
I got to thinking about all the 12 in 12 sweaters that are out there unfinished.  I’m sure so many of them are soooooo close!
.
I have one.
.
Georgia, the 12 in 12 from September 2011.   Here is my last blog post about it.  In fact, it was still in that same bag.  I dug it out of my closet.
.
.
Jennifer had one too…
This one wasn’t so long ago.  This past year.
.
.
.
Heather has one too!  Sullivan from 2o12.  Sooooo close!
.
.
Oh, Krishell has one too…Central Park Hoodie.  She actually has two…a Harvest Moon from May 2011…she just has to find it:)
.
.

So, do you have a 12 in 12 that is soooo close to being finished?  Come in and finish them with us!
Tuesdays in January we’re doing a free get ‘er done class!  We’ll help you figure out where you are and get you back on track.  With ANY 12 in 12 sweater.
.
Oh one more cool thing?  Finish it in January and we’ll get you a Darn Knit Anyway Fiber Fiver!  Five bucks towards any purchase.
.
Come spend some Tuesdays with other delinquent 12 in 12 knitters:)  There are no shortage of them!
.
See you Tuesdays in January!

Aidez Cardigan – November 12 in 12

Sunday, November 3rd, 2013

.
We’re 3 days in and I am done with the back!
.
Now, to be fair…I started early.  We have an Aidez class that started last week so we all got a bit of a head start.
.
.
.

.
It’s been a fun pattern so far.  The lovely Heather, here in our shop, made this great cheat sheet for the back chart.  Feel free to use it too if you want.
.
I made a cheat sheet too, this one is for cabling without a cable needle.  If you want to try it!
.
One change we made to the pattern is to to a purl row right after the ribbing and not a knit row.  Knitting that row made a purl ridge that we didn’t love on the right side.
.
.
Still time for you to jump in:)

She’s lost her knitting mojo

Monday, September 16th, 2013

Jen’s lost her knitting mojo.
.
She’s working on that darn 12 in 12 sweater, Chambourcin, and has completely no desire to knit.  Not the 12 in 12, not a simple hat…not anything.
.
It’s working up beautifully though.
.

Chambourcin Mojo

.
Have you been there before?  Have you lost your knitting mojo?
.
I told her that fall is coming and she’d better find it:)

August 2013 Week 2

Thursday, August 15th, 2013

Stay tuned for a message from the sponsor of this post, Jennifer.
.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>…
Hello Fellow Chambourcin Knitters,
.
As of today I have about 19″ of the back knit.
.

Chambourcin

.

Chambourcin

.

.
Its beautiful and I am happy with how beautiful it is to this point. But, now I am stuck. I have started the arm hole. I am about 2 inches in and I have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to decide what to do with the lace pattern at the underarm. The designer does not specify, at least I can’t find it anywhere, on how to progress with the lace pattern, once you start the decreases.
.
I checked out how the various sizes have done it on Ravelry. Some have carried 1/2 of the lace pattern up to the top and others have dropped the lace pattern and carried stockinette stitch rest of the way to the top. I like how the stockinette looks, but most of the finished garments that I looked at only had 4-5 rows of stockinette. After, I’ve finished decreasing I have nine extra stitches remaining. I think that would just look too wide and not right.
.
So, I have thought about decreasing 3 more stitches on each side, so that I only have 6 stockinette stitches at the edges. Generally I find my armholes rather gaping on me so perhaps this is what I’ll do. Needless to say, I just can’t come to a decision that I’m comfortable with…..
.
Oh decisions, which way would you proceed?
.
All input is welcome. I’m so rarely undecided about how to handle knitting patterns and their corresponding idiosyncrasies, but this one just happens to have me stumped.
.
Yes, I really, really like my sweaters to turn out perfect. I guess some would say that makes me a perfectionist, but indecisive, now that’s not me. Please, help me get out of this quagmire of choices!
.

Cheers, and happy knitting and decision making!

-Jen

August Sweater Begins

.
Jennifer has cast on for August and is loving this yarn!  She’s knitting Chambourcin out of a Phydeaux Designs yarn base.
.
Looks beautiful to me, but let’s let Jennifer tell it…
.

“I cast on tonight. The first two inches are complete and I’m switching down to the next smaller needle. I love, love,  love the knitted fabric is creating. It’s beautiful, non pooling with a subtle sheen. I truly think this is one of the most beautiful and luxurious yarns that I have ever knitted. I was dragging my feet to get started on this sweater and I’m growing more interested and excited with every row I knit.”
.
It’s still not too late for you to get in on this sweater.  Are you knitting August?
