Day 1 – Spinning with Intention

Morning: Default Yarn – Your Spinning Superpower

Your everyday spin is the yarn you make without thinking about it, your preferred prep and draft, resulting in your favorite yarn. It’s the yarn equivalent of your favorite jammies. In this session, we will examine your go-to yarn in detail from fiber, wheel set-up, prep, draft, ply, size, and finish. Once you understand your default yarn, you’ll be ready to tackle almost any yarn for any project. Through detailed examination, we’ll learn how to make choices and shift techniques to consistently create the yarns that pair perfectly with the projects you have in mind.

Afternoon: Twist – Exploring Size and Consistency

The key to spinning consistent yarn is learning to control twist. Twist is the heart of spinning: it’s what shapes fiber into yarn. Learning to manipulate twist is the key to creating a yarn that’s a consistent thickness, no matter the size. We will explore how wheel set-up affects twist, and will use control cards, ply back samples, and grist calculations to track our yarn. We will talk about how and why to control the amount of twist in your yarn. You will learn methods of changing the size of your yarn from lace to super bulky, and gain skills to keep your yarn consistent through a single braid or a whole project.

Day 2 – From Worsted to Woolen, Draft and Preparation

All Day

We will start the day exploring worsted drafting techniques. We’ll draft forward and back, to see the benefits of each direction, spin different preparations to see how fiber prep affects a worsted draft, and look at the characteristics and uses of worsted spun yarns. Then we’ll begin our woolen journey to create a lofty, cozy yarn. We’ll practice woolen drafting from short forward and backward drafts, spinning from the fold, short draw and long draw, keeping an eye on drafting zones and twist to manage size and consistency.

As we work on our woolen draft, we will spin several woolen and woolen-ish preparations: roving, sliver, rolags, batts, and top.  Each preparation spins with different amounts of loft and spinning them side by side will help you fine-tune your woolen yarns. Once we have woolen singles spun, we’ll ply, woolen-style, and see how adjustments for consistency can be made to woolen yarns when plying. Our day will end with a bit of finishing, comparing different methods to make our yarns bloom.

Day 3 – Playing With Color

Morning: Tint, Tone, and Shade

Tints, tones and shades are stealth colors. Often overlooked in favor of their bright cousins, they fill out the color wheel with their ethereal lights, earthy mid-tones and smoky darks. In this session, we will combine solid colors with black, white and grey to make spectacular tints, tones and shades. You may hand card, hand comb, parallel draft, or ply as your combination method. These in-between colors are the secret to bringing color combinations to life. Tints, tones and shades are the core of ombré and tonal colorways.

Afternoon: Braids – Mix it up

This session focuses on the fun of mixing and blending painted braids with other colors and other braids. We’ll explore how to choose colors that go together, what affects color in spinning, and how to avoid mud in your yarn. You’ll learn how to mix and blend colors in the ply and draft, and how to choose fibers that work well together. While you practice your mixing and blending, I’ll show you how to choose colors to turn up or turn down the brightness of a braid, the best way to stretch braids for projects. Finally, I show you how to sample braids for color, and how to use those samples as shortcuts for your future braid spinning.
