Your Next Sweater: Fit, Customization, & Confidence

You've knit your first sweater, now what? In this four-session workshop, you'll build on the skills learned in your previous garment(s) and discover how small modifications can transform a basic sweater into something uniquely yours.

Using Tin Can Knits' Simple Sweater, a versatile top-down raglan that can be knit in either DK or worsted weight yarn, you'll learn how to confidently customize elements such as neckline shaping, sleeve details, hems, and finishing techniques. This class moves at a quicker pace than My First Sweater and is designed for knitters who already understand the basics of sweater construction and want to expand their skills.

Topics will include:

  • Reviewing gauge and selecting the correct size
  • Planning sweater modifications
  • Adding optional neckline shaping with short rows
  • Customizing sleeves and body shaping
  • Choosing hem and bind-off finishes
  • Troubleshooting fit throughout your project

Students will leave with a finished sweater and the skills to confidently customize future sweater patterns for the fit and style they want.

Class: Your Next Sweater: Fit, Customization, & Confidence
Skills required:  Students must already have completed a sweater or equivalent experience
You will learn:

Location:  DKA Makers' Lounge
Instructor:  Lori

Supplies Needed:

  • Simple Sweater pattern by Tin Can Knits (available on Ravelry or for purchase in the shop)
  • 850-2400 yards of worsted weight yarn, or 1100-3150 yards of DK weight yarn. NOTE: worsted or DK weight yarn recommended.
  • Needles: US 6 & US 8 (worsted) or US 4 & US 6 (DK weight) or sizes needed based on your knitting tension, in 16" and 32" circular lengths
  • Stitch markers, barber cord or scrap yarn; tapestry needle; scissors

Homework (before the first class):

  • Knit one or more swatches in the round by casting on 30 stitches and working approximately 4" in stockinette stitch.
  • Experiment with needle sizes until you create a fabric you love. (Gauge is important, but liking your fabric comes first!)
  • Block your swatch(es) naturally. Do not pin or stretch the fabric.
  • Record the gauge of each swatch before and after blocking.
  • Bring your blocked swatch(es), full bust/chest measurement, and pattern to the first class.

Unsure about swatching or how to interpret gauge? Consider taking Lori's one-session Simplifying Gauge workshop before class.
