4 in 12 KAL - Hairst Hap Hood

We're excited to announce our final 4-12 Knit-A-Long of 2025, and it is a hood! We wanted to pick something smaller, unique, and giftable for the upcoming holiday season. We are excited to dive into this piece with you all!

This KAL begins on Zoom on Wednesday, October 8.

Our project this quarter is the Hairst Hap Hood by Gudrun Johnston.

The Hairst Hap Hood is a woolly and whimsical accessory designed to combine warmth with playful style. Crafted to offer cozy comfort during chilly days, its lofty woolly construction ensures the proper level of snuggle factor while the unique, playful design adds a charming touch to your fall and winter wardrobe. Ideal for those seeking both functionality and distinctive flair in cold-weather accessories.

The hood begins with a Shetland “hap” style construction to work the lower triangle shapes. After binding off for the front neck and then working short row shaping, the shoulders are joined using a three needle bind off. Stitches are then picked up around the neck area to work the hood. Short row shaping is used again to shape the top part of the hood and the two halves are joined with another three needle bind off. You can choose to leave the hood as is at this point or add in a purled I-Cord bind off and ties around the front hood opening and/or a wee bit of Old Shell lace to the lower triangles on body.

This piece can be knit in any fingering or sport weight yarn, but we especially like it in Jamieson & Smith 2-ply Jumper Weight. This wooly and warm fiber has beautiful structure, and comes in a total rainbow of marled and solid colors for you to choose from!

You will need 4 or 5 skeins of Jamieson & Smith, or 470-560 yards of fingering/sport weight yarn. One version has an i-cord tie around the edge of the hood, which uses more yarn. We highly recommend some woolier wools for this project, to ensure your hood has the structure intended. Other good yarns would be...

Darnie by Studio Donegal
Woolstok Light by Blue Sky Fibers
Shetland Supreme Jumper Weight by Jamieson & Smith
Patagonia Organic Merino
Excelana North Fingering Weight
Byre 2-ply Fingering Weight
Marie Cutie - Plies & Hellhounds

During Zoom sessions, extensive demonstrations may be limited, as we do our best to answer as many questions as we can and help as many people as possible! If you are wanting some one-on-one help, we recommend attending the Study Hall In-Person classes on the opposite Wednesdays as the Zooms. If you are unable to attend Study Hall, we ask that you call and make an appointment so we can assure that one of our staff is available to assist you.
You may or may not have experience with some of these techniques, and we anticipate that everyone will be at different learning stages throughout this knit-a-long.
