Simplifying Gauge

We all know we’re supposed to swatch, but do we? And more importantly, do we know what to do with the information once we have it?

In this lecture-style class, Lori takes the mystery (and dread) out of gauge. You’ll learn how to:

• Create efficient, useful swatches
• "Speed swatch" in the round
• Measure and interpret your swatches
• Adjust needle size and tension to create fabric you love
• Accurately measure your body
• Determine your ideal garment ease
• Use simple math to reconcile your gauge with a pattern
• Understand why swatches can lie, and how to plan for it

 By the end of class, you’ll understand how to choose the right needles, yarn, size, and ease — and how to use gauge as a reliable starting point — so your finished garments fit beautifully the first time.

Class: Simplifying Gauge
You will learn: How to swatch for a specific pattern gauge; making adjustments to achieve gauge; how and where to take body measurements for sizing; and why swatches lie. You'll also sample several different tools to make calculating gauge easier.

• An informative handout 

Supplies Needed:

• 10 yards of scrap yarn and corresponding circular needles in two consecutive sizes (i.e., worsted weight yarn; size US 7 & 8 needles)
• your favorite gauge-reading tool (not a fabric tape measurer)

Lori will be sharing a lot of information during this lecture-style class. Bring something to take notes with and feel free to bring one of your knitting projects to work on while you listen to how to Simplify your Gauge : )
