Quick Bulky Mitten

Quick Bulky Mitten

Our first Quick Bulky Mitten class of the year finished up yesterday!

Great comments from our stellar students…

“I love taking classes here.  If DKA had a class on how to skin a bear I would take it.”

“These mittens should be called SuperBulkyFabulisticExpialidocious Mittens”

Both are great suggestions and are seriously being considered!

New Years 2015/6

Let’s face it, this is what we’ll all be writing in the for the next 2 months right?  At least I know I will!

As we do every year, we like to wrap up 2015 by telling you about our year at the shop.  We did it last year, and in 2013.

DKU student identification card

Nanny’s ID

Yeah! We are so, so happy about this. And there are even more chances for learning this coming year. If you know a friend that is ready to learn, we have learn to knit options almost every week through April! And remember, every registered student in this trimester earns 10% discount on any purchase through the trimester.  So that’s a 10% discount through April!

bead happy necklace
Our most popular kit – by far – this year was Diane’s Bead Happy Necklace Kit.  If you didn’t make one yourself, you are missing out.  It’s so fun!  Click here to get registered for a class to make the kit, or stop in and buy one.  So fun and easy!

gum

The misc item in the shop we sold the most of?  Our Blueq gum is the winner this year again. So funny and fun.
uptown spirit stripes scarf
Our most challenging project this year?  You’d think it was a hard fair isle hat or a sweater?  Nope it’s a simple knit 2, purl 2 scarf.  Who knew this one would be so challenging!!  This project required patience and flexibility for knitters this year:)  The yarn, Uptown Worsted Spirit Stripes in the Packers color was our top selling yarn this year.  The Vikings color was a close 2nd!

simplicity01

One of our most popular yarns and colors?  Hikoo Simplicity in white:) This yarn, in this color sold more than just about any other yarn.  Cream color was a close second.  We LOVE this yarn and the worsted version, Simpliworsted. Two of our most favorite yarns in the shop. You must love it too!

quince_logo

Our most popular brand of yarn, Quince & Co.  We sold more skeins of Quince than any other yarn brand.

cotton lustre wrap DKA_Linen_Stitch_Cowl_medium2

These two projects were our most popular of 2015 in the shop.  Carroll’s Cotton Lustre Wrap and Carly’s Linen Stitch Cowl.

Thanks so much for another terrific year.  We feel lucky every day to get to do this job!  Here’s to a happy, healthy and blessed 2016 for all of us!

6 Years!

Friday, October 9th, 2015

It’s been 6 years since we officially opened the doors to Darn Knit Anyway.  6 years of dropped stitches, great conversations & building friendships.  It’s hard to believe. We’ve come a long way.

When we opened the shop, we had no idea what we were doing. What yarns to buy, what needles, what notions, what patterns? Those first few days Carly and I did Rock Paper Scissors to see who would help someone if they came in with a knitting problem. We didn’t want to win. We weren’t sure we could help.  We’ve come a long way.

We’ve come a long way and still have a long way to go! We will continue to have great yarns and samples for you to fondle.  We will continue be a place that is comfortable, easy and fun. We hope to always be able to say that we are more than a yarn store.

We aren’t having a big party today, no public celebration of 6 years, but we are celebrating.  Celebrating our little shop and the 6 years of beautiful, challenging, heartfelt, heartbreaking, hilarious memories we shared with all of you.

Smiling, Knitting and Singing

Nan

If you’ve read our blog at all over the last 5 years, you’ll know about our beloved Nanny Jean.  She is Carly and my grandmother. We called her Nanny or Nan.  There are plenty of blog posts about our Nan.  This is a great one..and this…heck, just search Nanny on our blog:)

Anyway…we are always paying attention for little signs from our Nan.  We are open to that kind of stuff.  Friday was a big one!

Here is how it went down.

I got a call early last week from a sweet older woman looking for help on a prayer shawl.  I told her I’d be happy to help if she came in.  Then she said it was crochet.  Now, I can crochet and if necessary I could probably have limped my way through helping her, but really Carly was the person for this task. Carly is my cousin.  Our Nan taught us both to knit.  You can read a bit more about Carly here.

Carly isn’t the worlds most proficient crocheter either, but she’s better than me.  So, I told the lovely customer when Carly would be in and told her maybe it was best she come in when Carly was working.

A little preface here…
Our Nan loved coins. She got in some trouble once buying too many coins:) She used to collect coins for Carly’s kids. Hogan got quarters, Lily got dimes and Henry got nickels or something like that.  Anyway, coins and Carly and Nan are connected.  A few years ago Carly was moving to a new house and starting a new phase of her life. When she was all done cleaning out a storage locker, she was sweeping it out and found a threepence.

Have I mentioned our Nan was from England?  We just knew then that Nan was watching out for Carly.  Since Nan passed, Carly has been finding dimes in random spots.  It’s just a weird little thing.  So, whenever Carly finds the dimes, she takes a sec and thinks of our Nan.

Cut to Friday.

The crochet customer came in Friday for help with her project. Carly got her back on track (of course she did) and the customer was ready to leave.  She got her cane and started walking out of the classroom. Carly could sense she needed some assistance so she took her elbow and started to help her.  All of a sudden the customer bent down and picked something up and handed it to Carly.

It was a dime. The customer said “I think this is for you”.  This person, who was having trouble even walking, bent all the way down like it was easy as pie and picked up the dime. Carly asked her for her name and it was Fran.  Carly thought, of course it is.  It rhymes with Nan.  She smiled.

There were a few people in the shop at the time and Carly told them to hold down the fort.  She was going to walk Fran to her car.  So she took her hand and made sure she made it safely into her car.

When she got back in and back to the counter she said to the next customer, who had been patiently waiting, “Remind me of your name”.  The customer said “It’s Nan”.

Carly said “Excuse me?  What?”

The woman said “It’s Nan.  That’s my name”.

Carly thought, of course it is.  It’s Nan!  She smiled.

We hear you Nan! We love and miss you!

Wow!  What a weekend!

All we can say is thank you.

Total dollars donated to food banks around the twin cities was over $37,000! Fiber junkies are a generous lot. I speak for all the yarn store owners when I say thank you!

Thank you for playing along by putting our silly temporary tattoos in funny places:)

Are you wondering where all the other texts are?

I’m slowly getting used to sending text messages. I don’t want to be a pest on your phone, so I’m being REALLY choosy about what information I text you.  You won’t ever get more than 2 a week.

If you haven’t gotten in on the text action, it isn’t too late.

Text the letters “DKA” to the number 51660 and get signed up. Then just show your text confirmation at the register the next time you are in!

Guess Who?

Friday, October 24th, 2014

guess who

We had a very important all employee meeting a few days ago.  Many extremely important things were discussed, as you can well imagine at a DKA employee meeting!

Well, as kind of an icebreaker, because we are all so incredibly shy, we decided that we should play a little game.  We each got a slip of paper and wrote a fact about us that no one in the room knew.  We put the slips in a basket and each of us drew a slip and had to guess the which fact matched which person.

Boy did we learn a few things.  Can you match the fact with the person?

The Facts
1.  My nickname given to me since childhood is “weenie”
2.  I had 3 guinea pigs growing up
3.  I am a graduate of Stripper 101
4.  I am wearing men’s underwear
5.  I used to play the oboe
6.  I was a cheerleader in high school
7.  I take canoe trips into the quetico where you see no one for days and love it
8.  I fixed the hallway squeeky door
9.  I married my high school sweetheart.

The Staff
a. Aimee
b. Jennifer
c. Carly
d. Heather
e. Nadia
f. Katie
g. Carroll
h. Corrina
i. Michelle

So, what do you think?   Can you match up the fact with the staff?

Bring a friend for free

Friday, October 3rd, 2014

We are in a generous mood here at DKA.  We are 5 years old next week!  Yahoo!  We’ve learned a lot in 5 years.  Wow.  We looked back at our first year here.  It’s good stuff!

To celebrate we are offering all classes as 2 for 1.  That means when you sign up for a class, you can bring a friend along for free.  How great is that?

keep calm and bring a friend

So, if you are going to take the Polar Vortex Hat class for example.  And why wouldn’t you?
