10 out of 12 Ain’t Bad

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

.
10 out of 12 ain’t bad.
.
At least that is what I am telling myself.
.
You remember September right?
.
December’s sweater isn’t going to happen either.  At least not this December.
.
I herniated a disc in my neck 3 weeks ago today.  C6/7.  It was incredibly painful and I like to think I have a pretty high threshold for pain.  I mean a few months after my son was born, I drove myself to the ER with a kidney stone.  Not pretty.
.
I wish I had a great story about how it happened.  I don’t.  I just stood up on a Sunday morning.  Just stood up out of bed ready to take on the day and felt the sharp stabbing pains in my back and down my left arm.  It literally knocked me down.  The only thing I could do on that day was lay flat on the bed.  That was the only way I felt some relief from the pain.
.
By about 7:30 that night, I couldn’t take it anymore.  My sister came over to watch our kids and my husband drove me to the ER at Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater.  Let me just say…that place is great.  And I am not just saying that because as I was getting a shot for the pain, my amazingly kind nurse said “Don’t you own that yarn shop on Main Street?”  I said I did and she said “I thought you looked familiar”.  What was it I wondered, the tear strewn face or the fact that my pants were pulled down for the shot that made me look familiar?  Funny.  She said “I LOVE that shop, every time I come home with a Darn Knit bag my husband gives me a look”.   It was a great moment of levity in an otherwise horrific time.
.
Anyway, the pain medicine worked (oh except for the nausea from the narcotic…yep, throwing up is not fun normally imagine doing it with a herniated disc in your upper neck).  For the next 3 days, the only way I was comfortable was with my left hand on top of my head.  The telltale sign of someone with a C6/7 herniation I have come to find out.
.
12:30 am on Thursday morning was our 2nd trip to the ER.  This time the doctor said he was recommending to the general practice doc that I get an MRI asap.  I got 2 more shots of pain drugs and left with some Vicodin.  For the record Vicodin is trouble.
.
That night at 8:00 we headed back to Lakeview Hospital to get an MRI.  Now, I had no idea what an MRI would be like.  It was not pleasant.  They were trying to take images of my neck, so they kept asking me not to swallow.  “This next one is going to be 6 minutes Aimee.  Try not to swallow”.  Yeah right.  And does it have to be that loud?
.
The next day we had an appointment with the Neck guy who recommended a steroid shot in my neck, he said it was likely to offer me immediate relief.  I was all for it.  The whole shot in the neck thing was super easy actually and didn’t hurt at all.  The only part that hurt was the nurse telling me “well, with age comes degeneration of your discs”.  WHA???  I’m not even 39 yet.  Ouch.
.
The shot helped immensely and I could take my arm down from my head!  Wahoo!
.
Now I am in physical therapy, and religiously using ice and advil.
.
I do have a whole new appreciation for those living with chronic pain.  Pain makes you crabby.  Pain makes you depressed.  Pain makes you not care much about things you should care about. Pain makes you snap at people you love.  I feel lucky that I started with a pretty high happiness level.  I have great family and friends that are incredibly supportive.  This too shall pass.
.
But, in the mean time.  The December sweater is a casualty of the herniation.  It won’t happen.  My pointer finger on my left hand is numb and the top of my left hand hurts.  I am a picker, I knit continental most of the time.  This isn’t working for me.  I plan to get my hand back in working order and get ready for January 1st.  I AM casting on for January!
.
So, thanks to all of you for your well wishes, advice and impromptu massages.  Thanks to Carly for handling the shop with grace (even through her own injury) and thanks to the DKA staff for your hard work picking up my slack these last 3 weeks.  I appreciate you.
.
Bring on 2012.

It’s ok…I have a doctors note

November sweater won’t be done.
.
Not in November at least.
.
When last we spoke, Saturday night, blocks were drying.  Hopes were high.
.

When hopes were high

.
It all changed on Sunday morning.  I couldn’t sit up or stand without sharp stabbing pain in my back.
.
Fate gave me a big kick in the pants and told me I had better slow down.  If I’m being honest, i would say that fate had been talking to me for a few weeks with soft little twinges that I of course ignored.  Well, there is no ignoring this.
.
2 middle of the night trips to the ER
pain meds
physical therapy appointments
numb fingers on my left hand
the only way I can stand or sit comfortably is with my left hand resting on my head.  Yep. That doesn’t help the numb fingers too much.
.
A pinched nerve is not how I was planning to end November.  At least that is all I hope it is.  MRI tonight at 8.  We’ll see what fate has in store for December.  You can bet I’ll be paying very close attention to any minor twinges this time around.
.
Thanks to my DKA girls for holding down the fort this week. As soon as i can stand upright, I’ll make it up to you!

Good Riddance September

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Take a good look at this photo…
.

Pretty things all in a row

,
Take a look at all the pretty things I knit this year.  Gorgeous sweaters hanging happily in the shop, just waiting for the weather to turn.  I am proud of the sweaters, I am.  I am proud of them, but I am sick of them too. I am embarrassed to even say it.
.
I am a glass half full kind of girl (I think I have talked about that before).  I didn’t have a doubt that I would be able to handle all 12 sweaters.  I always thought I would finish them.  I struggled through a few months (March…I am looking at you)  but still got them finished.  Until this month.  September.
.
I wasn’t super excited about knitting a fingering weight sweater, but I was pretty sure I could do it.
.
I didn’t take into account a bunch of drama this month that would take me away from happy knitting.  I frantically stockinette stitched while thinking of all the crazy things that were happening.  Every time I even thought about knitting the sweater, all the negative emotions came up again.  Wierd…I know.  I never anticipated that this 12 in 12 game would get the better of me.  But this month.  September.  It did.
.
So, take a closer look at the wall of sweaters…there is one that is still in a project bag (yes even I use cheap plastic bags for project bags).  Carly thought she would be funny and hang up September on the hanger.  I think it is perfect there.  As much as I don’t want to admit it.  I am human too:)
.

September Sweater

.

Bring on October!
.
*I want to say that my drama was mild in comparison to things that other people I love were going through.  I whined way more than I had a right to:)

Sept 26, 2011

Monday, September 26th, 2011

.
I’m not going to sugar coat it.
.
Just going to come right out and say it.
.
I lost the project bag containing my partially knit September Sweater.
.
Yep.
.
Last time I saw it…in a blue bin in our classroom.
.
Have you seen our classroom lately?  Not exactly the picture of neat and orderly.
.
.

Classroom Organization

.
Another thing that I am just going to come out and say.
.
I am not exactly sad that I lost it.   Um.  Did I say that out loud?
.
Who’s brilliant idea was it anyway to knit a sweater in a month out of sock yarn.  Huh?  Who’s the wise guy?
.
Please don’t judge me.  It has been a crazy few weeks.
.
You might have heard we launched Darn Knit University.  So cool and fun!
.
The lead up to the launch of DKU was overwhelming.  Lots and lots of hours spent doing data entry at night.  We are talking weeks of late nights getting it all figured out.   We are really proud of it and are excited that lots of people are excited to enroll!
.
All was going along swimmingly (except for a few hiccups) Then last week all hell broke loose.  The brilliant company that  hosts my website lost my shopping cart database.   There is more to the story, but I am trying not to dwell on it for fear of tears bursting from my eyeballs.
.
Anyway, last week was spent re – entering all the data to get it back to where it is now.  Still not perfect (it would be great if someone could actually register for a class online sometime soon) but…it is awesome to have all the images and descriptions back up.
.
Needless to say, I needed a break from the crazy that has been my shop life.  So, 3 of my high school girlfriends and I ventured out to enjoy a weekend in the north country.  We headed to Bemidji to see one of my friend’s kids play football for the Bemidji Beavers.

.
Like most knitters, the thought of a 4 hour one way car ride brings excitement!  WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO KNIT???
.
.
I have to admit that knitting the 12 sweaters this year has been fun, but knitting them feels like work right now.  Especially the sock weight sweater!!  So, I decided not to look very carefully for the missing project bag full of the September sweater and instead knit something that I didn’t have to knit.
.
I chose to knit the Best Friend Sweater from Spud and Chloe.  So cute and Maggie, my 7 year old, will love it.   Knit with Spud & Chloe Sweater yarn (no itch wool and cotton blend) in bright fun colors.  It was a joy to knit on our car ride and the best part was that I didn’t have to do it.
.

.
Is it ok for me to NOT finish a 12 in 12?  My catholic guilt is going to set in.  Might have to dig through the classroom today.  hrumph.

August 23rd, 2011

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

So, I know some of you have been wondering if I fell off the face of the earth.  I haven’t been posting much.  Carly and I have been working hard getting our fall schedule into our new online shopping cart.  I promise it will be worth the wait.
.
All of my late night knitting time has changed to late night computer data entry time.  I haven’t picked up my needles since the first week of August.  I have about 4 inches done.  I did pick up my needles this weekend at a pool party.  I did one row and got distracted…it’s easy to do at a pool party!
.

One row done!

.
We have had a few finishers so far and I have heard from a few more that they are getting close.  Hopefully I’ll get done too!
.
Luckily, Carly and I and the whole Doyle Clan are heading off to our annual family party in Two Harbors this weekend.
.

Nanny and her legacy

.
Carly and I spent some quality time knitting on the porch last year, and I anticipate we’ll do more of the same this year:)  3 1/2 hour drive up…2 days of knitting…3 1/2 hour drive home.  I expect to make a nice dent in the August Sweater!
.

Carly and I at the Doyle weekend last year!

.
I promise to post when we get back home.  I hope to be able to at least put the August sweater on!
.
Wish me luck.

August 2nd…Ummm…July Done!

July Done

Pretty, pretty

Broken Rib Back

Broken Rib Back

Well...almost done

It’s done!  Yipee!
.
Well, almost done, just 2 little ends to finish weaving in.  I ended up doing the back in broken rib instead of the cables.  I needed a mindless knit while waiting for Maggie, my 7 year old, to get an x ray on her arm.  Broken.  Bummer.
.

Broken Arm. Bummer

The cables were just too much for my guilty mommy brain to handle.  I waited 3 days to take her in to get the x ray.  I was sure it wasn’t THAT bad.  I mean she could move all her fingers and everything.  Oh well.  Chalk that one up to a learning experience.
.
Maggie is happy now, she is at Girl Scout Camp this week at Lakamaga.

I am happy now, because I get to knit plain old stockinette for August!

I realize I have not been documenting my July sweater very well.  I guess like most of you, knitting isn’t my priority in the summer.

But ok…I have done some knitting.  Here are some updates.
.
I started knitting and got 6 hours in and only had 3″ of knitting done.  This ain’t no stockinette stitch:)
.

6 hours of knitting= 3"????

.
I got all messed up, it may or may not have involved my favorite cold summer drink.  I’m not saying…
.

see the extra twist on the left at the bottom??

Anyway, I was going to rip back a few rows and then re-knit and then my very special facebook fan Cori (gotta love her) gave me the nerve to just drop down and twist it the other way.  Yeah, sure Cori, I’ll just do that.
.
Well..I started ripping back and kind of freaked.  I thought maybe Cori wasn’t crazy.  So, I just went for it and sure enough, did it.  Yeah Cori!!
.

see the nice new twist on the right now? Yipee!!

.
One skein down…

All with one skein!

Here come the armholes

Closer...

.
By the way…let’s take a closer look at all of these photos.  The color green doesn’t look the same in any of them.  Might I say that is a great reason to buy yarn at your local yarn shop and not online:)  Just a little plug for the little guys!
.
So, almost done with the front.  The back is pretty much a mirror image.  Wonder how stockinette would look instead:) Hummmmm.

Amy's June

June was the Somewhat Cowl from Knit and Tonic.  Carol and I did the sweater out of Blue Sky Alpaca’s Alpaca Silk.  Michelle and Amy used Cascade 220 SW Sport!   Thanks ladies for knitting with me!
.
If you want to participate in one of our 12 in 12, check out all of them here.  After I finish this super cute little sweater I am knitting, I’ll cast on for July.  I’m doing this lovely cabley vest out of Dream In Color Classy color Shiny Moss.
